Why are calculator keypads and telephone key pads set out differently?

telephone keypads always have 123 across the top and 789 along the bottom.
Calculators are the opposite.
Does anybody know the history of this?

the telephone tone pads came first. they had to be used by common people and starting top/left proved easiest to understand. this layout also places the alpha characters, which were in common use at the time, in proper sequence. fyi the bottom row is not 789 but *0#, in fact dtmf actually has 16 tones, and some times you see nerds carrying a complete 16 button pad.

NASA invented the electronic calculator for the space program. The first users of this technology was accountants to replace adding machines. the original adding machine had a column of buttons, starting at 1 on the bottom and working up to 9 at the top. in this application it made sense for the numbers higher on the column to be bigger numbers. there was a column of numbers for each decimal place, so this type of adder was a huge array of buttons. the 10 key adder was an improvement. because the number of buttons was limited, an accountant didn't need to move his hand around and could in-fact learn to operate without having to watch the keys. keeping eyes on the book meant much faster operation. the layout of the 10 key adder followed adding machine format of putting smaller numbers on the bottom. Managers did not want to retrain their best accountants, so the calculator was made to emulate the 10 key adder and not the telephone touch pad.
