How do I make an external hard drive the default hard drive?
I bought a Western Digital External Hard Drive and would like to use it as my hard drive for my laptop (my internal is no good). I tried using Windows XP recovery CD to install Windows onto the external, but after loading everything it said the system would restart and Setup would continue. It never resumed. I would like to install Windows XP to the hard drive and use the drive as my primary hard drive. How do I do this and how do I get Windows XP installed on it?
Your bios needs an option called "Boot from USB" in the screen where you can select which device to boot from first. If it doesn't support that, this won't work.
If it does, try switching to this option with only allowing "cdrom" as a second boot device, and remove your internal hard drive from the list completly. Also uncheck the option to "search other sources for a bootable drive" as well.

And by god, don't try opening your laptop and switching settings to slave unless you can do so without opening the entire casing, your warranty will be lost and it simply isn't neccessary.
